BIOGRAPHY
Yohanna M. Cruz conducts research at the intersection of structural dynamics, human–structure interaction, embedded sensing, and data science. Her work seeks to transform buildings and infrastructure into intelligent systems capable of sensing, interpreting, and responding to human needs. Through the integration of probabilistic modeling, signal processing, machine learning, and multi-modal sensing technologies, she develops infrastructure-embedded systems that enable continuous assessment of human mobility, behavior, and functional change in everyday environments.
Cruz’ long-term vision is to advance human-centered intelligent infrastructure that enhances resilience, safety, accessibility, and quality of life within future smart cities and communities. Her research further explores how structural systems can serve as distributed sensing platforms, enabling health-aware buildings, accessible smart environments, and infrastructure that proactively supports aging populations and individuals with disabilities. Her broader research interests also include probabilistic modeling of smart materials.
Prior to joining the University of Central Florida, Cruz held faculty and research appointments at Montana Technological University, the University of South Carolina, and San Francisco State University. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation. She received her doctoral degree in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Universidad del Valle, Colombia.
