Dr. Ni-Bin Chang has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2018 and was recognized for his contributions to the field of nutrient monitoring, removal, and possible recovery in aquatic environment. Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.
Dr. Chang holds 9 U.S. patents related to green sorption media for removing nutrients from different urban low impact development facilities, agricultural crop fields, and wastewater treatment plants. All the 9 US patents have been licensed to a new company, Environmental Conservation Solutions (ECS), Inc. through the Office of Research and Commercialization at UCF, attracting $20 million industrial investment. These green sorption media products have been marketed and distributed in North America and part of the Europe through the ECS vendors’ network. He worked with colleagues in the Stormwater Management Academy to develop over 70 innovative test beds and field applications that can be used to remove nutrients with potential recovery in Florida.
