FE EXAM  Information

The Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) regulates the practice of engineering in the State of Florida and is responsible for reviewing applications, administering examinations, licensing qualified applicants, and regulating the practice of engineering throughout the state. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is one of the requirements to obtain a professional engineering license. (This exam is overseen and administrated by the FBPE and not by UCF or CECS.)

Basic information on how to register for the FE Exam

The exam is conducted eight (8) months out of the year in four (4) testing exam windows (January-February, April-May, July-August, and October-November) at Pearson Vue Testing Centers. Exams are not administered during March, June, September, and December.

The FE exam must be taken by civil, environmental, and construction engineering majors prior to graduation.

For additional official information regarding the FE and PE Exams, including registration and frequently asked questions, please visit the FBPE website at www.fbpe.org.

If you want to sit for the FE examination you have two choices to register: pre-approval from FBPE or direct registration with NCEES.

FBPE Option – Includes Engineer Intern Certification

  • Visit FBPE.org  website
  • Complete the FE Initial Examination Application – $30 (submit an application with a signed letter of good standing from the UCF Registrar’s Office (takes a few days to get signed)
  • Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you are then able to register with NCEES. Please note: approval can take up to 45 days
  • Once the exam has been completed the grades will be reported to the candidate and the Board. When the Board receives notification of the passing candidates, EI certificates will be issued and mailed to the recipient
  • If the candidate should not achieve a passing score, he or she must either re-register directly with NCEES (if this option was taken) or submit a re-exam application to FBPE for approval to schedule another attempt to take the exam. Things to Consider:
    • This option allows candidates to receive an additional certification (EI – Engineer Intern Certificate)
    • This is a less expensive option if you’d like the additional EI Certification
    • Please note: If you schedule the FE Exam before you receive approval from the FBPE board, you will be required to complete the Endorsement Application ($100)

NCEES – FE Exam Only Option

  • Please note: FBPE doesn’t require you submit the Initial Application or additional fee prior to registering with NCEES and scheduling and FE Exam
  • Visit the NCEES.org website
  • Register with NCEES by creating an account
  • Schedule Exam – $175  Things to Consider:
    • This option doesn’t include the EI Certification.
    • If a student chooses this option first and then later wants EI Certification through FBPE, the student must complete the Application for Endorsement of Engineer Intern Certification ($100). This option is $70 more in total to receive the EI Certificate. Application then registration is the less expensive way to proceed.

(If you are an international student without a US Social Security Number you must pursue this option)

What to do after you receive results

Exam results are typically available within 7–10 business days. You will receive an email notification from NCEES with instructions to view your exam results in your MyNCEES account. Results will include a link to your licensing board for additional state-specific information or instructions. All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.
