Meeting Minutes
January 25, 2007; Teleconference
Attending: Debbie Reinhart, Bob Baillod, Stu Walesh, Frank Hutchinson, Al Gray, Larry Esvelt, Paul Bishop, Terry Gloriod, Wayne Echelberger, Marty Matlock, Susan Powers, Dale Jacobson, Bill Boyle, Jeannette Brown
- D. Reinhart provided a brief history of the EEBOKWG formation as well as an overview of the NSF ASU workshop.
- Discussion followed concerning the use of the term BOK vs. core competencies. Some members continue to have concerns over the use of BOK; however the consensus was to continue to use BOK and to carefully define the term in the final report.
- It was pointed out that the participants at the workshop clearly had great passion for their work, the environment, and for society at large and the EE BOK must capture this passion.
- The list of draft outcomes was discussed at length. This list was developed
from the NSF ASU workshop breakout sessions (presentation attached) and mapped
to the ASCE BOK outcome list.
- Question: how do we capture the passion, creativity, and innovation needed to be an EE in a list? The list really includes topics not outcomes. The list should be viewed as a starting point.
- The draft list is missing several outcomes identified at the NSF workshop (creativity, integration of discipline, cyber infrastructure)
- ASCE has added two outcomes, social science and humanities.
- Questions: Does every EE need to know about every topic listed? If so, at what level; if not which should be eliminated? It is unlikely that in 5 years all 46 outcomes listed could be mastered at a high level. Can some outcomes on the list be viewed as options?
- Next Steps
- Outcomes must be developed and organized
- A draft outline of the final report will be developed and sent to the group for discussion
- Next meeting will be February 8, 2007 at 4 PM EST.
Action Items:
- D. Reinhart will update the roster and provide an email list that the WG members can use to communicate with each other
- Each WG member is to consider the outcome list and reflect on what level of knowledge (if any) might be needed for one or more environmental engineering specialties with which they have some familiarity. Bob Baillod will update the outcome list and distribute.
- Frank Hutchinson will develop a draft outline of the final report.
Respectfully submitted by D. Reinhart 1/27/07
